The Fifth Annual ASPRS GeoLeague Challenge

To be held at the ASPRS 2015 Annual Conference
Tampa, Florida
May 4-8, 2015

This year’s Challenge Topic is: Philmont Campfire Sustainability Stories
 
The deadline to REGISTER for the GeoLeague Challenge is Janurary 26, 2015.
 
Get your ASPRS Student Chapter involved or form a group ASPRS student members at your institution to compete for prizes.

The Challenge:

Create a camp-style story of a simulated experience at camp in creating and preserving trails and camp sites.  Use Geospatial methods, including maps, Landsat imagery, provided materials and additional sources of the groups choosing to analyze the current trails on the Scout ranch.  Each team is to approach this challenge as if they are placed directly in the heart of the ranch (virtual camper) and designated as the GIS expert for this location.

Deliverables:

Provide a short detailed history of the Boy Scouts 2-3 pages and ideologies in their mission and purpose.

Create a 20 minute presentation for the 2015 ASPRS Annual Contest from the perspective of a virtual camper.

Suggestions include:

  • How to engage community involvement using geospatial technologies? 
    • Cultural Services including aesthetics (decline in quality and quantity of natural lands) and recreation and tourism (more accessible areas may be degraded).
  • What economic and social challenges are important to consider in this community?
  • Identify areas of risk and how to mitigate changes needed to susceptible areas.
  • Identify natural resources.
  • Regulating Services such as those for climate (e.g., carbon sequestration), water purification (varies with ecosystem change and location), and natural hazard regulation (loss of natural buffers such as riparian areas, water sources, and forest)
  • Create a susceptibility rating for existing trails

How to Participate:

Form a group of no more than 6 undergraduate and/or graduate students and a faculty advisor in your region (at least 1 students must be ASPRS student members by the registration deadline and remain student members through the Annual Conference). If you have trouble meeting this requirement, please feel free to contact us.  You may also enlist the help of ASPRS members in your surrounding communities. However, the students must do all of the work; non-students can only provide guidance!

All materials must be submitted by 8:00 pm EST on April 15th, 2015.
There will be NO extensions granted for late materials.
